The short answer
- Any notes app: drag the note window to the other screen. Most apps reopen it there next time, as long as that screen is connected.
- In Stickies (mine, $4.99 once with a 7-day free trial): open Settings → Dock → Which screen and pick Second screen. The dock moves there, and notes open from it on that screen.
Choosing a screen in Stickies
Settings → Dock has three choices under Which screen:
- Main screen. The screen Windows calls your main display. This is the default.
- Second screen. Your other monitor. If it isn't connected, the dock stays on your main screen until it is.
- The screen my mouse is on. The dock goes where you're working. Press Win+Alt+N and the new note opens on the screen your mouse is on.
Under Screen side you pick the left or right edge. Pick an outer edge of your desk, not the edge where two screens meet. Otherwise the notes can open whenever your mouse crosses over to the other screen.
Notes that stay where you put them
To keep a single note in view, open it and press Ctrl+Shift+P to pop it out into its own window. Drag it to any screen. It stays on top of other windows, and it comes back in the same spot the next time Stickies starts.
When you unplug a monitor
This is where sticky notes usually get lost: windows stay at a position on a screen that's no longer there. Stickies watches for screen changes:
- The dock moves back to a screen you still have.
- Popped-out notes that would be out of reach move onto a screen you can see.
- All Notes and Settings remember their size for each screen, so they fit when you go from a big monitor to a laptop screen.
If the dock still goes missing, right-click the Stickies icon near the clock and choose Reset Dock Position.
Different screen sizes and scaling
If one screen is 4K at 150% scaling and the other is 1080p at 100%, Stickies sizes the dock for the screen it's on and keeps it clear of the taskbar on that screen.
